Vehicle Safety

All vehicles taken on organized club runs must conform to the following standards and have the following equipment.

VEHICLE STANDARD
Current warrant of fitness or equivalent and registration are not compulsory , but vehicles without registration or warrant of fitness must be up to rally scrutineering standards and can be checked by a club official on any club run.


SAFETY
During any club competitions or events it shall be at the organizers discretion to make the wearing of seat belts and crash helmets mandatory on any of the course which the organizer thinks fit.


TOW HOOKS
Tow hooks must be securely bolted to the front and rear of the vehicle .While hooks should be bolted directly to the chassis , this not always possible so good engineering practice when mounting must be observed. ( this will be checked by one of the club safety officers) Towing hooks / eyes must be securely bolted using high tensile bolts of appropriate size and under no circumstances welded . The use of tow balls is not permitted .


RECOVERY STRAP / ROPE
A nylon recovery strap 6 to 9 metres in length with a minimum of 80000kg breaking strain . Proper stretch recovery straps / ropes are to be used . Lifting strops and chains are not to be used for tow / snatch recovery as they create dangerous loads on vehicles in these types of recovery situations.


FIRST AID KIT
First aid kit containing adequate supplies to treat minor injuries .


SHACKLE
Rated shackle with a minimum safe working load of 2000kg.
Shackle must be stamped with SWL 2000kg on it. Also a wooden joiner for joining tow straps as shackles should not be used for this purpose.


FIRE EXTINGUISHER
Minimum of 0.9kg extinguisher must be securely mounted in the vehicle in an easily accessible place. Extinguisher must be in good working order


ROLL BARS
Roll bars must be fitted to all soft and open top vehicles , and highly recommended for hard top vehicles as well.


SPADE / SHOVEL
A spade or shovel must be carried by all vehicles


TOOLS ETC
It is also a good idea to carry a basic set of tools and spare fan belts , radiator hoses to suit your vehicle .


EXTRA EQUIPMENT
In addition to the above , if a winch is fitted to your vehicle you are required to use a winch blanket. Also it is a good idea to carry a snatch block , extra shackles , and a winch cable extension strap/ rope ( one that does not stretch ) .
